New DVD Releases This Week: Silver Linings Playbook, Guilt Trip

The big releases this week are Silver Linings Playbook and Guilt Trip. I want to see the former but will probably skip the latter. Also this week, all the Star Trek movies are being released on Blu-Ray.

Silver Linings Playbook, R      Amazon
An American romantic comedy-drama film directed by David O. Russell (from a screenplay by Russell) adapted from the novel The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, with Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher and Julia Stiles in supporting roles.

The Guilt Trip, PG-13      Amazon
A comedy-drama film directed by Anne Fletcher from a screenplay written by Dan Fogelman, starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, who both also served as executive producers on the film.

Broken City, R      Amazon
A crime thriller film starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. The film was directed by Allen Hughes and written by Brian Tucker. Wahlberg stars as a police officer turned private investigator, and Crowe stars as the mayor of New York City who hires the private detective to investigate his wife.

Not Fade Away, R      Amazon
From David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, comes a story about discovering your passions, following your dreams and finding yourself. It’s the 1960s and Rock and Roll is changing the world. Inspired by a bold new era and his success in a local band, Douglas (John Magaro) drops out of college to pursue his musical dreams, only to discover the harsh realities of the music industry. Douglas is forced to choose between listening to his father or listening to his heart.

TV This Week: Doctor Who Revisited; Season Finales of Vikings and The Following

TV This Week icon

Doctor Who Revisited is up to the fourth Doctor (the one with the long scarf) and Tom Baker participates in this special to air tonight. Also tonight is the Season Finale of Vikings; it has been renewed for another season. Monday is the Season Finale of The Following. Lastly, Modern Family and Saturday Night Live return with new shows.

These are the TV shows I plan on watching this week. Most of them I will watch by DVR or OnDemand. All times ET.

 

Sunday

60 Minutes. CBS, 7:00pm.
Scheduled: Steve Kroft speaks with serial killer nurse, Charles Cullen, who confessed to as many as 40 murders in a 16-year career; a profile on jockey Rosie Napravnik, the only female riding in the upcoming Kentucky Derby.

Doctor Who Revisited, The Fourth Doctor. BBC America, 8:00pm.
A detailed look is taken at the iconic television show Doctor Who, featuring The Fourth Doctor, who was played by Tom Baker, who used a recognizable, long scarf and an eccentric style of dress and speech to make the part his own.

The Simpsons, Pulpit Friction. Fox, 8:00pm.
When Homer is recruited to be a deacon at church by the new reverend in town, Bart asks Flanders to help track down Reverend Lovejoy as Homer begins to get too invested in the faith; Marge finds that the dry cleaners swapped her wedding dress.

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, Columbia. CNN, 9:00pm.
Host Anthony Bourdain observes how Colombia has changed over the past 10 years as he travels from the central mountains to the Caribbean coast and visits inland sites that were formerly coca farms controlled by the drug cartels.

Mad Men, The Flood. AMC, 10:00pm.
In an attempt to attain a sense of security for herself, Peggy begins to plan for the future; Roger sees an opportunity to add another big account to the agency, which leads to him pulling out all the stops in order to impress the potential client.

Vikings, All Change. History, 10:00pm.
* * * Season Finale * * * King Horik commissions Ragnar to assemble a crew to resolve a dispute over land in Gotaland with its leader, Jarl Borg, but their encounter may not have the intended outcome; the village asks Lagertha to plead with the gods to rid a plague.

* * * Season Finale * * * Ryan races to capture Carroll and put an end to his plans before they reach their deadly conclusion; Carroll leads Claire to a top-secret location as he begins to prepare for the final showdown between himself and the FBI.

Aaron inadvertently finds his life turned upside down as he accompanies Rachel on her adamant quest toward the mysterious tower; tempers begin flaring to catastrophic proportions between Miles and Monroe over a mutual infatuation of the past.

Bates Motel, The Man in Number 9. A&E, 10:00pm.
The Bates finally open up the hotel for service, and Norma is surprised to see who their first guest is; after attending the school for a few weeks, Norman begins to discover that even the popular girls can be complicated.

Phil is excited to talk to Luke and Manny's classmates for career day, but it doesn't go according to plan; Jay takes some shameful measures to prove to Gloria that he actually does want to be a novelist; Mitch and Cam fail at being the Tooth Fairy.

The Americans, The Colonel. FX, 10:00pm.
Philip and Elizabeth grow concerned that their latest orders may be a set up posing as a routine meeting; Stan continues his investigation with the FBI which brings him closer to the seemingly normal couple; the Jennings learn about their cover.

Secrets of the Dead, Bugging Hitler's Soldiers. PBS, 10:00pm.
Examined is the unprecedented and clandestine surveillance operation that revealed German POWs' inner most thoughts about Nazi Germany and a number of valuable military secrets that helped the Allies win the Second World War.

Bodies are turning up across Victorian Yorkshire, and as if that isn't bad enough, the skin of the corpses has a waxy consistency and is glowing with a strange, red light that betrays the fact that something ghastly is going on.

Host Zach Galifianakis, musical guests Of Monsters and Men.

The Simpsons, Whiskey Business. Fox, 8:00pm.
Moe winds up going into business when a group of venture capitalists take interest in his homemade whiskey; Grampa injures himself while babysitting Bart, leaving Bart to take care of him; Lisa is insulted by a hologram of Bleeding Gums Murphy.

Maria (Naomi Watts) and Henry (Ewan McGregor) take a winter vacation in tropical Thailand and encounter a tsunami.

Gangster Squad, R      Amazon
Gangster Squad is a 2013 American action crime film directed by Ruben Fleischer, from a screenplay written by Will Beall. It starred an ensemble cast that included Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Michael Peña, and Giovanni Ribisi. The film is loosely based on the story of Los Angeles Police Department officers and detectives forming a group called the "Gangster Squad unit" who attempt to keep the city safe from Mickey Cohen and his gang during the 1940s and '50s.

The Killing: The Complete Second Season, Not Rated      Amazon
Set in Seattle, Washington, this season follows the continued investigation into the murder of local teenager Rosie Larsen, with each episode covering approximately 24 hours.

A Haunted House, R      Amazon
This is a 2013 American satirical comedy film directed by Michael Tiddes and starring Marlon Wayans. The film is a parody of the "found footage" genre, such as the Paranormal Activity franchise and The Devil Inside.

Promised Land, R      Amazon
Promised Land is a 2012 American drama film directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand, and Hal Holbrook. The screenplay is written by Damon and Krasinski based on a story by Dave Eggers. Promised Land follows two corporate salespeople who visit a rural town in an attempt to buy drilling rights from the local residents.

Jurassic Park, PG-13      Amazon
Yes, that Jurassic Park. It's being released in 3D.

TV This Week: Doctor Who Revisited, Touch returns

Doctor Who Revisited is up to the fourth Doctor (the one with the long scarf) and Tom Baker participates in this special to air next Sunday night. Touch returns Friday with a new episode, will the series end during May sweeps?

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, Los Angeles (Koreatown). CNN, 9:00pm.
Host Anthony Bourdain gets a unique look at Los Angeles by confining his visit to the three-square-mile area known as Koreatown, where the effects of the 1992 riots that followed the acquittal of police officers accused of brutality are still felt.

Mad Men, To Have and To Hold. AMC, 10:00pm.
The heads of the agency decide to make a strategic move to keep a new campaign under wraps from the rest of the staff and others in the industry; Joan gets a visit from an old friend but the reunion causes some tension for her and her new life.

Vikings, Sacrifice. History, 10:00pm.
Anguished over the death of their unborn son, mixed emotions follow Ragnar and Lagertha on the traditional pilgrimage to Uppsalla to thank their gods, and Athelstan's Christian faith is put to the test during the Vikings' sacrifice ritual.

The Following, The End Is Near. Fox, 9:00pm.
Ryan, Parker, and Weston prepare to storm the Followers' mansion, unaware that Carroll has an escape plan; followers in disguise create a diversion at an evacuation center that leads to panic and the kidnapping of one of the FBI officials.

Revolution, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. NBC, 10:00pm.
When Neville mysteriously vanishes and his son, Jason, is left to make a big decision, Monroe is stricken with paranoia while Miles strengthens his bond with Charlie and suddenly begins experiencing romantic attractions to both Rachel and Nora.

Bates Motel, The Truth. A&E, 10:00pm.
While Norman is confused over Dylan's sudden request for him to move in with him, Norma can no longer handle Norman's friend Emma's interference in her family life and tells her face to face that some things are better kept to themselves.

When a mentally disturbed teenager is found murdered in a mental institution Megan and Tommy find a patient seemingly lucid and completely sane that says she witnessed the killer climbing down from a heating vent and meant to kill her.

Frontline, The Retirement Gamble. PBS, 10:00pm.
Leading correspondent Martin Smith investigates the financial services industry and the rise of the 401(k), revealing how fees, kickbacks and self-dealing are profiting Wall Street while putting consumers' savings in jeopardy.

After successfully ousting Phillip in last week's blindside, the 'Three Amigos' plan to take control yet again by concocting a lie to spread around camp, meanwhile the remaining castaways prepare for the infamous food auction.

One of the agents under Elizabeth's supervision returns to her with some valuable intelligence for sale; Philip and Elizabeth risk their lives in a possible set-up; Stan continues to search for Directorate S and gets some interesting results.

New DVD Releases This Week: Django Unchained, Repo Man, Parade's End

These are some of the new DVDs released this week, the ones I find interesting or of note.

Django Unchained is the lone major release this week. I haven't seen Repo Man in a very long time but I like it so I may track down a copy and watch it again. I really liked Ford Madox Ford's book The Good Soldier and would like to see the movie version of Parade's End (which I plan on reading sometime too).

Repo Man, R      Amazon
The cult classic from 1984 stars Emilio Estevez as a punker looking for a mysterious car. Directed by Alex Cox.

Parade's End, Not Rated      Amazon
The lives and loves of a World War One soldier. This is the 1964 film of Ford Madox Ford's classic book of the same name, stars Judi Dench and Ronald Hines.

Nova: Building Pharaoh's Chariot, Not Rated      Amazon
I saw this on PBS, it was very interesting. Back in the day, chariots were high tech and Egypt had some of the best. A lot of thought and effort went into their design and making.

TV This Week: Parts Unknown, Defiance, Central Park 5

The list of shows I want to watch is getting quite long, I may have to trim a few shows. Two new shows this week and a PBS special. Parts Unknown is Anthony Bourdain new travel show Sunday nights on CNN. Defiance is a science fiction show on Syfy that I know absolutely nothing about, I just saw it recently in the TV listings. The Central Park Five is not some new music group, they were falsely convicted of a sensational crime in 1980s.

So what shows would I stop watching? The most likely to be dropped by me would be Revolution and Body of Proof.

60 Minutes. CBS, 7:00pm.
Scheduled: Lara Logan joins African soldiers and their U.S. military advisors as they search for Joseph Kony; an interview with Cy Young winning pitcher, R.A. Dickey; Marfa, Texas, a cultural stew of cowboys and artists mixing it up in a small town.

The Simpsons, What Animated Women Want. Fox, 8:00pm.
Homer must attempt to save his marriage when Marge becomes fed up with his behavior; after watching "A Streetcar Named Desire" Milhouse decides to take on a Marlon Brando-inspired bad boy attitude to try and attract Lisa.

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, Myanmar. CNN, 9:00pm.
* * * Series Premiere * * * Host Anthony Bourdain has wanted to go to Myanmar, formerly Burma, for many years but was prevented by the country's government; a recent relaxation of control makes it possible for him to visit one of the most beautiful areas in Asia.

Mad Men, The Collaborators. AMC, 10:00pm.
Don struggles to form a good relationship with a client who threatens to affect the campaign they are working on; Pete does what he can to make a good impression on a guest; Peggy is left to tend to an unmotivated staff.

Vikings, A King's Ransom. History, 10:00pm.
Searching for a ransom in exchange for peace, Ragnar Lothbrok sets sail with three Viking ships destined for eastern England's heart of power, the Royal Villa of King Aelle, but the king has his own plans for the marauders.

 

Monday

The Following, Havenport. Fox, 9:00pm.
A local police department is brought into the case, and when Roderick's role as sherrif is called into question, he makes a decision that threatens Joey's safety; Ryan goes against the FBI in order to try and gain the trust of one of the followers.

Defiance, Pilot. Syfy, 9:00pm.
After aliens seeking a new homeland fight a war with the Earth, a former soldier returns to his old home of St. Louis to find it transformed into a battered refugee camp where humans and aliens coexist more or less peacefully despite dangers. Note: I'm not sure this will be on OnDemand or not, if it is then I will try and watch it.

A rich investment fund manager stands trial for scamming his investors out of billion dollars, but he is kidnapped outside the courthouse, and later a video surfaces of the man being killed; Megan gets closer to the truth about her father.

The Central Park Five, special, documentary. PBS, 9:00pm.
Five African-American and Latino teenagers are falsely accused of raping a white woman in Central Park, but after being convicted and spending over six years in prison, the real rapist confesses to the crime he committed in the 1989 case.

 

Wednesday

Survivor: Caramoan - Fans vs. Favorites, Zipping Over the Cuckoo's Nest. CBS, 8:00pm.
A debilitating accident may mean the end of the line for one castaway, meanwhile everyone is forced to scramble and possibly turn on one another at the latest Tribal Council after an unexpected bomb is dropped; only 10 participants remain.

The Americans, Covert War. FX, 10:00pm.
Elizabeth is left greatly affected after learning of shocking events that have occurred back in her home country, which leads to her aggressively trying to convince Phillip to take on a dangerous mission with her that could jeopardize their cover.

Sweet Smell of Success, 1957 movie. ThisTV, 8:00pm.
A despotic Broadway columnist, who uses his press power to destroy friends and foes, becomes determined to prevent his sister from marrying a jazz musician, so he hires an unscrupulous press agent to break up the affair. Stars: Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner, Sam Levene, and Barbara Nichols.

New DVD Releases This Week - Boss, Jet Li

These are some of the new DVDs released this week, the ones I find interesting or of note.

The first season of Boss was pretty good so I'll probably watch the second season. I think I remember hearing good things about Hyde Park on Hudson so I may catch it as well. I know nothing about The Sorcerer and The White Snake but I like Jet Li and Chinese culture.

Mad Men starts a new season tonight! Will you watch the Madison Avenue ad men now that the zombies are done until October? Frontline, PBS' documentary show, looks at the situation in Syria this week. No Touch this week, was last week's show the finale?

* * * New Season * * * Don attempts to further the growth of the agency by spearheading a new campaign that shows a lot of promise; Roger is left in a state of shock after getting some unsettling news; Betty decides to open up her home to a guest. 2 hrs.

Vikings, Burial of the Dead. History, 10:00pm.
After the discovery of Rollo's violent torture because of orders given by Haraldson, a weak and injured Ragnar goes to the Earl for a confrontation, but only one of the two men will walk away from the monumental fight alive.

The devastating and deadly religious feud in Syria is explored from both sides of the war, revealing the daily struggles of the rebels, government soldiers and civilians as people who once lived together peacefully now fight each other.

Survivor: Caramoan - Fans vs. Favorites, Cut Off the Head of the Snake. CBS, 8:00pm.
One castaway unwittingly learns a secret that could turn the tables on certain alliances; chaos ensues when the group cannot decide before Tribal Council whether to oust a weak and unsuspecting opponent or blindside a threatening one.

Modern Family, Flip Flop. ABC, 9:00pm.
Phil believes that he can sell Claire and Cam's flipped house, but recruits the entire family into taking desperate measures when it proves to be harder than thought; Javier annoys Gloria when he brings his new girlfriend to visit Manny.

NOVA, Australia's First 4 Billion Years: Awakening. PBS, 9:00pm.
Experts explore the red hills of Australia in hopes of uncovering the mysteries surrounding the birth of the planet and the evolution of life, with an in-depth look at an assortment of bacterial slime and other early forms of life.

The Americans, Only You. FX, 10:00pm.
Stan follows a clue that points him to one of Gregory's crew members, which brings him startling close to Elizabeth; Elizabeth and Philip find themselves having to once again deal with conflicts that threaten their professional and personal union.

Mad Men, The Collaborators. AMC, 10:00pm.
Don struggles to form a good relationship with a client who threatens to affect the campaign they are working on; Pete does what he can to make a good impression on a guest; Peggy is left to tend to an unmotivated staff.

Vikings, A King's Ransom. History, 10:00pm.
Searching for a ransom in exchange for peace, Ragnar Lothbrok sets sail with three Viking ships destined for eastern England's heart of power, the Royal Villa of King Aelle, but the king has his own plans for the marauders.
